Policy to Promote Healthy Eating

Introduction

Sample Menu
Research indicates that the North West has a very high incidence of both heart disease and tooth decay. This is no coincidence! It also indicates that ‘a diet that is good for your teeth is also good for a healthy body’.

Children do not have an inborn ability to select a balanced and nutritious diet, but increasing the variety of available foods should increase the number of different foods chosen. As children get older they are generally willing to eat a wider variety of foods, and snacks become an increasingly important source of energy and nutrients. Children who are consistently exposed to sweets tastes may reject other tastes and similarly children can become used to very salty food and not appreciate more subtle flavours. Diets that are not varied are often particularly low in fruit and vegetables.

With this in mind we consider it our social responsibility to promote healthy eating & habits from an early age. We have therefore revisited our menu’s and the ingredients used and have created our ‘Policy on Healthy Eating’. We are a tooth friendly nursery and have joined the 'Stop the Rot' campaign.

Policy

Only no added sugar cordial/naturally sweetened fruit juice will be used and no salt is added during our cooking processes or at the table.

Drinks

  • Pure fruit juice or milk is served at breakfast time.
  • Water is available at meal times and at all other times.

Meals

  • A breakfast snack of wholemeal toast with low fat spread will be served (occasionally plain biscuits may be served).
  • A nutritionally balanced 2 course cooked meal will be served at lunch time.
  • A light 2 course tea will be served.

Snack / Treats

  • Any edible rewards given by nursery staff will be a healthy alternative to sweets e.g. fun packs of raisins.
  • We recognise that the children will wish to celebrate birthdays etc. You are welcome to bring in birthday cakes that can be eaten at mealtimes to make it a special occasion but we would discourage bringing chocolates & sweets for distribution to the children.
